Colonel William Shirley, governor of Massachusetts from 1741 to 1759, was ordered to lead an army of provincial militia against Fort Niagara. Part of the Shirley Collection seems to date from the French and Indian War (1754-1763).
In January, 1966, the collection was purchased by the Pitt Rivers Museum from Colonel Shirley's son, Major Shirley.
