David Ives Bushnell collection of Canadiana
Collection consists of nine drawings and six watercolours by Thomas Mower Martin (1838-1934); six drawings by George Gibbs (1815-1873); nine watercolours and one oil painting by Paul Kane (1815-1872); six watercolours by Peter Rindisbacher (1806-1834); seven watercolours by William Armstrong (1822-1914); six watercolours by George Back (1796-1878); seventeen watercolours by Emile de Girardin (1829-fllg. 1864); as well as twelve watercolour, two drawings and one painting by various and unknown artists. The collection contains a diary of a fishing trip to Hunter Island, Ontario, in September, 1899, including text and 24 cyanotypes, along with one photographic portrait. Also in the collection is a letter dated 17 July 1919, to Bushnell from the dealer John Loomis, enclosing a letter dated 25 July 1860, from the Canadian artist Cornelius Krieghoff to the American traveller, sportsman, artist and author Charles Lanman (1819-1895). The works were acquired as part of Bushnell's interest in Native American history and life.
