Watercolor; pencil; wove paper.
This image is done in pencil with watercolor over, on wove paper.
This is a watercolour of two Odawa chiefs, possibly at Bois Blanc Island near Amherstburg, Ontario. The work was at first thought to be by Joshua Jebb, as his stamp is on it, however it is by an unknown artist. Jebb was stationed at Fort Wellington from 1813 and left Canada in 1820.
The image gives a detailed description of dress, for example the figures wear trade silver, one has an elaborately worked blanket, the other a coat with armband designs. It is very similar in style to works by Rudolph von Steiger or Steiger.
