Introduction

Coat of smoked deerskin cut with an attached shoulder cape cut in a tailored early Victorian style with punched designs on the bottom edge and cape. Lapels and cuffs of dark brown velvet embroidered in red, yellow and white porcupine quills in motifs of serpents and castellated and zig zag lines and with eagles under the lapels

Techniques or Format

man's coat cut in tailored style with two gores in back that create a narrow waisted style. Brown velvet sewn on to lapels and cuffs, think fringing extends on the outside at all seams

serpents, eagles or thunderbirds, castellated lines, wavy lines on lapels, back collar and under lapels

Original and Subsequent Uses

Jones wore this coat when giving public lectures to raise money for Methodist missionary activities and also to visit Queen Victoria and important officials
