Claus Family Papers
From LAC "Series consists of correspondence, journals, accounts and other records of Daniel Claus, his son William Claus, and his grandson Warren Claus, together with papers of Alexander McKee, Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, 1794-1799 (see also MG 19 F 16), and Prideaux Selby (d. 1813), Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs, 1797-1809. The McKee and Selby papers were acquired by William Claus when he succeeded McKee in office. The Claus family papers also include some of William Claus, Jr. (d. 1824), who served with the 54th Regiment, in Europe, Jamaica, South Africa and India; and John Claus (d. 1812) who served with the 84th Regiment. Volumes 1-12 and 13-19 form two overlapping series in basically chronological sequence. Commissions and land records (volume 20), notebooks and memoranda (volumes 21-22) and biographical and genealogical notes (volume 23) were largely separated from the main series. English translations of letters in Mohawk found within the first series of correspondence form volume 24, while the "Claus-Haldimand" correspondence relating to the use of Indians in warfare, 1777-1784, is found in volume 25 with transcriptions in volume 26. The history of that correspondence is summarized in the introduction to Finding Aid 41, together with a note on militia records separated from the Claus papers and integrated into RG 8. Available on microfilm reels C-1478 to C-1485. Volume 23, entitled "Genealogical Notes", contains a document of two pages on the sale of a black person to Daniel Claus. It is identified in the finding aid to the Claus papers as "Sale of a negro to Daniel Claus, 26 July 1763". Containers (volumes) 29 to 32 and 34 to 35 consist of documents in horizontal storage relating to land grants, declarations, and transfers as follows: agreement with the Chippewas to surrender 2,756,960 acres of land, 20 March 1819; part of the accounts of Daniel Claus, Indian agent; land grant to William Claus, Stanford Twp., Lincoln County, 28 August 1811; land transfer from George Clark to William Claus, Niagara, Lincoln County, 5 Jan. 1825; land transfer from John Lyons to Warren Claus, Niagara, Lincoln County, 4 August 1835; land grant to Richard Hyde, Newark Lincoln County, Home District, 14 December 1798; grant of a tract of land at Bay of Quinte to the Six Nations, 1 April 1793; official declaration made in 1805 of the cession of Mohawk lands in New York, 29 March 1797...[remainder of description pertains to stamps and postal history]"
