Woman's skirt. Hodenosaunee, Oneida. Collected near St. Thomas by Mark Raymond Harrington and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1909.

Materials

navy woolen cloth; printed cotton cloth; silken tape, pale yellowish beige with pinkish areas; size 16 opaque white seed beads, beige cotton tape; beige cotton thread; black cotton thread; cream cotton thread

Techniques or Format

The navy cloth, which makes up most of the skirt, is machine - sewn to the printed cotton, through which a cotton tape drawstring has been fitted. A 12cm panel of navy cloth is sewn to the bottom, and is decorated with a border of beadwork and silken ribbon. There are a few pleats sewn into the skirt.

Dimensions: 96 × 134 × 0 cm
Condition: A few holes in the skirt; bead loss and deterioration; silken ribbon is faded and worn away in many spots.
