Introduction

Two pairs of women's leggings. Hodenosaunee, from the Six Nations of the Grand River Reservation. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1906.

Materials

Pair 1: blue woolen cloth, medium blue silken tape, purple cotton tape faded to beige in some areas, beige and black thread, opaque white beads size 12 (with slight variations in size).

Pair 2: Black woolen cloths (at least three different kinds), burgundy, salmon, purple, medium blue and turquoise silken ribbon, size 8 beads in clear, translucent mustard, blue, red, pink and green, opaque green and cut black, black and grey thread.

Techniques or Format

Pair 2: possible machine sewing where the bottom panel is pieced to the top parts?

Pair 1 - Bottom: bottom to top: a row of downward-pointing triangles/ row of loops/ row of joined diagonal double curves.
Side: bottom to top: a row of downward-pointing triangles/row of loops (which is a few cm longer than the row of triangles)
Pair 2 - Bottom: bottom to top: diagonal double curve.
Side: a row of chained circles.
