Introduction

Woman's leggings. Hodenosaunee, probably from the Allegheny Reservation, New York. Collected from Jim Curry from Joseph W. Keppler. Acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1906.

Materials

Two different kinds of navy woolen cloth, green cotton tape, size 12 or 13 opaque white beads, beige thread, black thread.

Techniques or Format

Each legging is made with a large piece of navy woolen cloth, onto which a smaller strip of a slightly softer type of navy woolen cloth has been sewn. On one legging this strip is doubled over, while on the other the strip is of single thickness. Both legging has been sewn up, with a small section left open at the bottom. They have been cut to flare out slightly.
A hole on the back of one legging has been repaired.

Dimensions: 37.5 × 21 × 0 cm
Condition: Good. There are a few small holes in the cloth and the ribbon is discoloured in some areas.
