Woman's leggings. Hodenosaunee, Seneca. From the Cattaraugus Reservation, New York. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1917.

Materials

red woolen cloth (broadcloth), blue silken tape, sizes 16, 11 and 8 opaque white beads, size 16 yellow, blue and green beads, beige and black thread.

Techniques or Format

Both leggings are made from single pieces of cloth. They have been sewn up the front, with a 5cm opening left at the bottom. The edging is done with the larger beads, while the smaller white and coloured beads are used in the decorative designs.

The leggings are cut so that they flare out at the bottom.

Dimensions: 41.5 × 21 × 0 cm
Condition: There are a few small holes in the cloth.
