Woman's leggings. Hodenosaunee, Seneca. From the Cattaraugus Reservation, New York. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1910.

Materials

navy woolen cloth (possibly broadcloth) with yellow selvedge line, red cotton tape, sizes 14 and 12 opaque white seed beads, beige thread, black thread.

Techniques or Format

The top third of each legging is pieced - one legging has a single strip of fabric sewn to the top, and the other has a strip made of two pieces sewn to the top. Each legging is sewn together at the front seam, with spaces left at the top and bottom. They have been cut to flare out slightly at the bottom.

Motifs and Patterns

The beaded patten on one legging has three small vertical lines or rays extending from the arcs.
