Woman's leggings. Hodenosaunee, Seneca. From the Cattaraugus Reservation, New York. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1910.

Materials

black and navy woolen cloth; burgundy cotton tape; red cotton tape; size 12 and 10 opaque white beads; beige thread; brown thread.

Techniques or Format

Each legging is made from several pieces of cloth, sewn together. They are cut to flare out slightly at the bottom. Remnants of red cotton tape and larger white beads on pieces of navy cloth near the top of one legging suggest pieces of an older pair of leggings were used to make this pair.
