Introduction

Two Odawa or Anishinaabe birchbark and quillwork trays. Collected by Amos H. Gottschall from Northern Michigan. Acquired by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in 1936.

Materials

birch bark; sweetgrass; porcupine quills, white and dyed yellow, orange, green; black thread.

Techniques or Format

Each panel is made from two pieces of birch bark, edged with bundles of sweetgrass sewn on with black thread. Porcupine quillwork decorates the inner sides of the panels. The four side panels have scalloped rims.

Floral motifs. The flowers' stamens are represented with knotted quills.
