Introduction

Necklace constructed of braided strands of sweetgrass, with beaded sweetgrass discs sewn around the circumference. Beadwork features symmetrical geometric designs. Collected by Lewis Henry Morgan circa 1840s. Seneca origin.

Materials

Sweetgrass, silk ribbon, wool velvet, glass beads

Techniques or Format

Nine discs, sweetgrass strands are braided into nine different braided strands. Discs and ribbons alternate around the entire necklace. Each disc is made of silk background, edged with silk ribbon in a different colour. Beadwork is done on top of this. Beaded edging. Backing is coiled sweetgrass. Edged with silk tape
