Introduction

A pair of snowshoes with flat rounded toe and tufts of red or brown yarn along the sides. Attributed to the Huron-Wendat from the mid 19th century. Acquired by Museum Volkenkunde through an exchange with the Christy Collection in 1869.

Techniques or Format

With wooden frames and two crossbars, these snowshoes have a tapered end and flat rounded toe. The netting is made of babiche that is fastened to the frame at the toe and tail sections with the selvage thong method, and at the foot sections through wrapping. Hide thongs are tied to the netting in the middle for securing to feet. Tufts of possibly brown or red yarn(?) decorate the snowshoes edges of the toe and tail.
