Introduction

A pair of miniature moccasins and a miniature snowshoe, probably made for the souvenir trade. Souvenirs of this kind were made under the auspices of Canadian government economic development programs such as the Department of Indian Affairs Welfare Training Division which began in the 1930s. Miniature items, such as these, were often intended to be made into brooches.

Techniques or Format

The snowshoe has a wooden frame with cotton thread webbing and tufts of blue and red woolen yarn. The moccasins are puckered-toe style with inset vamps, separate cuffs ad T-heel seams. They are decorated with one little stitch of quillwork.
