Introduction

A pair of snowshoes with wooden frames and babiche netting. Red woolen yarn tassels are attached to the frames. The letters "A F" are carved on both snowshoes. Probably made in the 19th century.

Techniques or Format

The wooden frames have fairly rounded, flat toes. The hide tie for the foot is laced through babiche webbing in a horizontal pattern before emerging at the toe area to tie around the moccasin. Snowshoe tails are sewn together with spruce root. Red woolen yarn tassels are attached to the frames. The letters "AF" are carved into one of the horizontal wooden pieces on both of the snowshoes.
