A small Hodenosaunee beaded sewing kit. From the Victorian era (1837-1901). Donated to the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology by Marshall Joseph Becker in 1991.

Materials

blue cotton; glazed beige cotton; green silk tape, faded; small clear glass seed beads; grey bugle beads; stuffing material; beige thread; paper.

Techniques or Format

Made from two pieces of cloth -blue cotton, which forms the outside, and glazed cotton, which forms the inside. They are sewn together with green silk tape edging. The centre section has an additional 'pillow' stuffed with an unknown material. Beadwork applique decorates the exterior and a one-bead picot edging decorates the sides.
