Huron Wendat moosehair embroidered bark purse or container with figures smoking and drinking, tripods with kettles, birds. Analine dyes and style date this to the period c 1860 to 1900

birchbark, moosehair, aniline and natural dyes, narrow red silk ribbon, black thread

Techniques or Format

square bottom, sides are slightly concave with curved sides, top is made of triangular panels that slant in. small metal rings (?) inserted at the top corners. Silk ribbon is threaded through to close.

birds, male and female figures drinking and smoking, tripod and kettle, trees and plants

Other Notes

the silk ribbon used to close the top is long enough to have been used as a handle, suggesting this may be a small purse
