Summary of Collection Description

Materials

Glass beads, blue, white, yellow, pink, red, clear, violet, also applique violet silk ribbon, on dark blue wool stroud, lined with woolen fabric and trimmed with green woolen cloth and cotton patterned fabric.

Techniques or Format

Beaded on one side only with flowers and framed by zigzag beading, upper and lower panels framed with double line of beads and beaded applique silk trim, Narrow strap (3.3 cm) of blue stroud, backed with red and brown cotton fabric and trimmed with violet silk ribbon.

Motifs and Patterns

Flowers and leaves, Two bead edging around pouch and pocket edges, Three line and two bead line zigzag geometric border pattern on upper and lower pocket panels and between pockets.

Original and Subsequent Uses

Carried as personal gear.

Other Notes

Stroud distressed with wear holes front and back; woolen trimming and bead edging ripped and frayed on sides and bottom; upper panel separated from backing along seam; silk ribbon trim on strap worn and frayed on edge.

Collection Narratives and Histories

Konantz Collection - H4-0720 to H4-0-869/ Collection handed down intact from McTavish to his eldest child. Edith McTavish married Robert Rogers. Mrs Rogers was the first woman MLA in Manitoba (1920) who gave the collection to Margaret (Rogers) Konantz whose eldest son William Konantz made the donation to The Manitoba Museum.
