Introduction

A pouch made of blackened hide with drawstring construction and two panels decorated with porcupine quills. Possibly Penobscot or Abenaki, made between 1800-1880. Purchased by the museum from Professor Moseley in 1882.

Techniques or Format

Bag is made of blackened hide sewn together with drawstring construction. Each side of the pouch is composed of two panels decorated with porcupine quills and edged with fringe. Fringe is sewn between the seams of the two panels and up the sides of the pouch. The two panels are decorated with porcupine quills applied in zigzag band and simple line technique, with a different design on each side. A series of eyelits around the opening of the bag likely for the lacing of a hide thong drawstring that is now missing.
