Introduction

This pouch was hand sewn brown velveteen, Calico fabric, and beads that were embroidered over the paper. The beads were opaque white, opalescent white, shades of blue, dusty rose, transparent red, green, and shades of yellow. Designs were asymmetrical floral motifs. This pouch was likely made between 1850s and 1880s in the Eastern Woodland area among Iroquois. Item was acquired from Mrs. Fred R. Jueneman in 1958.

Brown velveteen base; B is interfaced with Calico fabric; A and B lined with plain weave Muslin; both have paper backing to beadwork; cotton thread; metallic sequins with seed beads; size 13/15 and 19/21 edging seed beads: opaque white, opalescent white, shades of blue(3), dusty rose, transparent red, green, shades of yellow (2).

Motifs and Patterns

Almost identical patterns on front and back, with some bead variation but same design. Asymmetrical within each design. Floral motifs with white outline.
