Introduction

This is the portrait of Ho Nee Yeath Taw No Row, the Hodenosaunee sachem who with three other sachems,Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow, and Etow Oh Koam, known as the Four Indian Kings, traveled to the English court of Queen Anne as ambassadors of the Five Nations confederacy. It is in the John Petre collection.

Motifs and Patterns

This is a portrait of the Hodenosaunee leader, Ho Nee Yeath Taw No Row, dubbed King of Ganajahhore Nations, set in a forest landscape. Just behind him is the figure of an animal, possibly a dog. He holds a bow, there is a quiver of arrows at his feet, and he wears an embroidered or woven belt. Other items of his dress are also detailed.

Acquired with a special grant from the Canadian Government in 1977.Commissioned for the court of Queen Anne, the paintings appear to have passed from the Royal Collection into the Petre family of Kent sometime in the 1830s, and thence continued by family descent to the vendor.
