Carved wood with pigment, ribbon and brass tacks

Techniques or Format

Pipe stem carved from ash. Divided into two sections: lower section is flat and has scalloped edges with grooves cut into the peaks. Two parallel rectangular perforations, through which black and green silk ribbon is tied, are found at upper end of the flat section with two brass tacks. Traces of red pigment are evident.

Motifs and Patterns

The upper section of the pipe stem is carved into a spiral. The two outer edges of the spiral are grooved with a deep channel. The two surfaces of the spiral each have a raised central ridge.
