Pipe bowl, flared
This relative is a pipe bowl that flares out towards the opening of the bowl where the tobacco would be placed into the pipe. The maker incised a pattern of diagonal lines along the midline of the bowl bordered by two strips of a repeating pattern of triangular shapes. There also appears to be a star shape incised onto the the flat end at the bottom of the bowl. GRASAC researchers suggested by the appearance of the inside of the bowl that this relative had been smoked before and likely used in ceremony. While the precise origins of this relative are uncertain, it was collected by German soldier, Johann Ludolf von Unger, who was based in the St. Lawrence River region during the American War of Independence.
This relative currently resides at the Städtisches Museum in Braunschweig, Germany.
