A birchbark pin cushion with silk ribbon sides and porcupine quillwork decoration in leaf and floral motifs, made between 1850-1900. Purchased from E. Horloos in 1894.

Techniques or Format

Pin cushion is made of two pieces of birchbark decorated with porcupine quillwork and edged with black cotton tape, with cream coloured silk ribbon sewn along the sides. Fine wood shavings used for stuffing. Green silk ribbon tie sewn to the top edges of the birchbark.

Leaf and floral motifs in quillwork; pincushion is possibly in the shape of a flower pot(?)

Dimensions: 6 × 6.5 × 0 cm
Condition: Silk ribbon very fragile, wood shaving stuffing coming through sides. Cannot be removed from clear box.
