Techniques or Format

This is an etching with drypoint on wove paper.

Mrs. Simcoe copied this portrait from a drawing made by Henry Hamilton, governor of Detroit (1775-79) (later governor of Quebec). The drawing is in the collection of the Houghton Library at Harvard.

Because Mrs. Simcoe was not familiar with print techniques, she forgot to reverse the order of her plate inscription, although she remembered to reverse each individual letter.

Motifs and Patterns

This is a portrait of Paccane, a Miami chief. He is depicted in profile, wearing long patterned ear ornaments and an arm band. He has what seem to be elaborate tattoo designs on his shoulders and is carrying a pipe.
