Necklace, wampum and dentalium

This relative, a wampum and dentalium necklace, is made of shell beads including purple and white wampum beads (quahog and whelk shells) and dentalium shells. The beads are strung on a string of natural fibres, double knotted to form the necklace. The beads form a repeating pattern of one purple wampum bead, one white wampum bead, one dentalium shell. The pattern is broken alongside the knot where 7 purple beads are strung in a row on either side of it. The origins of the stringed necklace are not certain; however, it has probable connections to the Northwest Coast and Eastern Woodlands.
This relative currently resides at the Bank of Canada Museum.
Mix of West coast dentalium shells and East coast wampum beads leads to some confusion about the provenance of this necklace. Though it was acquired from an antiques dealer in Vancouver, the use of wampum beads signals a connection to the Eastern Woodlands region.
