Introduction

This necklace was heddle woven with linen thread and seed beads of yellow, black, shades of blue, greens, opaque brown, red, and dusty rose. Tabs were beaded and finished with red yarn. Pinwheel/eight-pointed star and nested lozenge designs were created with alternating colors. Necklace was likely made between the 1890s and 1920s in Great Lakes area and was later acquired in 1953 from Mrs. Charles Scudder.

Materials

Linen thread, yarn. Size 11 seed beads: background yellow, black, shades of blue (4), shades of green (2), opaque brown, color-lines and transparent red, dusty rose. Greasy: green and yellow. Yellow may be from two dye-lots, or show variation from dirt. Unidentified fabric remnant near the tabs.

Techniques or Format

Heddle woven. Ends of warps made into tassels and tabs. Sewn in three spots.

Motifs and Patterns

Pinwheel/eight-pointed star and nested lozenges alternating. No specific color pattern, but does exhibit some playful color consistencies. Tabs alternate green and blue.

Condition: Semi-fragile overall. Some beads undergoing corrosion.
