Introduction

This ancestor has four turtle feet and a snapping turtle (mshiikenh) tail. The first two of the four feet have four claws, while the other two have five. It is unclear if the claws are missing or if the ancestor was created with only four. All the feet have dried skin and are in the shape of semi-circles. This ancestor's scales are visible, especially around the claws, and the scales and claws are dark brown in colour. The tail comes from a snapping turtle and appears to be just the tip of the tail. It is also scaly and brown, and the bone is visible where the tail was removed. The ancestor's tail has a slight curl to it. In addition to the feet and tail, the bundle contains a miniature baagndibe'gan (war club), headdress, deerskin ball, necklace, rattle, and bandolier sash. The bundle was collected by M.G. Chandler in Bkejwanong, Walpole Island, where local knowledge connected the bundle to Pontiac. The subsequent collector, Richard A. Pohrt thought the bundle was not old enough for this connection and thought the bundle might be related to Tecumseh instead. This relative and bundle currently reside at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
