mokuk; birchbark container
Mokuk made of one piece of folded birchbark and an attached lid. Quillwork in chained diamond patterns one side of the container, and four hourglass motifs on the other side. On the the lid, quill work is in a line of chained diamonds with a zigzag on either side. Collected by Johann Georg Schwarz in the 1820s, this item is currently housed at the Weltmuseum Wien, Austria.
Autumn Epple theorizes based on style and materials, as well as similar mokuks collected by Schwarz, that this object was made by the Odawa.
GRASAC research notes created during an onsite visit to Weltmuseum in January of 2016.
