Materials

Birchbark, porcupine quills, wood, spruce root, linen thread

Techniques or Format

Bark is folded over ash splint ribs, sewn with spruce root, embroidered, gunnels laid across ribs

Other Notes

Robert Storrie: A model canoe from British Museum's Stoneyhurst Collection (c. 1880) displays similar construction; Alan: a model in the Hunterian identified as Mi'kmaq has a similar ashsplint ribbing; Ruth: are these porcupine quills or a commercial fibre?

Condition: Fair; extensive loss of quills.
