Introduction

A pair of moccasins with ribbon applique and beadwork, made in the late 18th or early 19th century. A note accompanying the moccasins describes them as Illinois, from Canada. In the collections of The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Donor unknown.

An attached typewritten label reads 'Illinois, early 19th century, Canada.'
There is a pencil note in the accession book that says "South Illinois" but it is not clear who wrote the note.

Materials

deer hide; silk ribbon in magenta, dark green, light green or grey; opaque white glass beads sizes 10 and 12; linen thread.

Techniques or Format

The moccasins are cut all in one piece: the cuffs are integral, rather than separate pieces. They are of pointed toe, centre seam construction. The centre seam and cuffs are covered with ribbonwork applique and beadwork, edged with white beads in a single picot technique.

Geometric motifs, chained diamonds and curve motifs.

Dimensions: 26.5 × 0 × 0 cm
Condition: very good, some fading of the green or grey ribbon.
