Introduction

A pair of early 19th century Hodenosaunee or Anishinaabe moccasins decorated with quillwork. In the collections of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Donor unknown.

Nation of Origin

The museum's catalogue record notes a typewritten label attached to the moccasins, which reads "Iroquois, early 19th century, Canada." This style of moccasin has also been attributed to the Anishinaabe.

Techniques or Format

The moccasins have a pointed toe gathered onto the front flap, a heel dart and rectangular ankle flaps. Over the centre seam on the vamp are bands of loom woven quillwork, which is also sewn to the silk ribbon-edged cuffs. A line of zig-zag band quill embroidery covers heel seams and quill embroidery in zig-zag band stitch borders the woven quillwork on the cuffs and vamp. An additional line of dome shapes are embroidered in a single stitch along upper the borders of the cuffs. A fringe of metal tinkle cones and hair has been attached to the bottom edge of the cuffs.
