A pair of sun smoked deerskin moccasins decorated with quillwork on the vamps. Probably made in the late 19th century.

unsmoked deer skin; porcupines quills, natural; cotton thread (coloured, which suggests late 19th century)

Techniques or Format

The moccasins have unusually narrow inset vamps with puckered toes, with quillwork all done in overcast stitch. The centre seams on the heels have no tabs. The cuffs are sewn on and the tongues are differently shaped - one is squared and the other is rounded.

Dimensions: 0 × 10.6 × 0 cm
Condition: Good condition. Not worn, but quillwork and hide faded.

Based on style - the use of coloured thread suggests a date of manufacture of the late 19th century.
