Materials

tanned, smoked hide. Porcupine quills in (red-faded to orange), blue-faded, white, yellow. White size 10ish beads.

Techniques or Format

Virtuoso. Quillwork techniques: 4 quilled diamond, simple line, zig zag bands

Motifs and Patterns

3 lobed motifs, wavy lines, interconnected circles (concentric)-- J Brant says you can see original of inspiration for ribbon work in these designs. Alternation and repetition of colours. Alternating bands of red and blue quillwork.

Additional Context

An animated design, a lot of movement. Circles on vamps -- dancing figures? a forward orientation to the design (JMoses)

Judy Hall suggests Dorothy Burhman did sketches of moccasin designs. These sketches are in the CMC archives. Should be attached to the record for this item.
John Moses discusses how CCI is gauging fade rates of pre-industrial/non-analyine dyes.

Dimensions: 24 × 0 × 0 cm
Condition: Good general condition but some loss of glass beads and fading. No use or wear marks.
