Introduction

A pair of Hodenosaunee moccasins with cuffs and ribbon ties, made ca. 1880. Velveteen(?) vamps decorated with raised floral beadwork. Purchased from collector Herman ten Kate in 1883.

Techniques or Format

Pair of moccasins made of tanned hide with inverted T seams at the heel. The inset velveteen(?) vamps are sewn to the hide, edged with white glass beads and decorated with raised beadwork in floral motifs . The velveteen cuffs are bound with red cotton tape and are ornamented with white beads on the lower edge. Red cotton ribbon is sewn along the tops of the cuffs and tied at the front across the ankle. Moccasins appear to be lined with natural cotton cloth(?).
