Introduction

A pair of U-vamp, wrap-around moccasins decorated with porcupine quills. Made between 1830-1850, attributed to the Metis. Acquired by the museum through an exchange with the Christy Collection in 1869.

Techniques or Format

Wrap around style moccasins with inverted T seams at the heel, U-shaped vamps and puckered toe. Vamps are decorated with porcupine quillwork in zigzag band and simple line technique, and edged with a raised line of possibly quills wrapped around split bird-quill(?) or porcupine quills. Hide thongs laced through four holes on either side of the moccasin.
