Buckskin, silk ribbon, cotton fabric, glass beads

Techniques or Format

Deerskin moccasin has flaps of black fabric with red and faded blue and green ribbons in pattern featuring three bow shapes outlined in white beads. The pattern of the red embroidered stitching at the edge of the vamp is the same as seen by CW on some sweetgrass pieces. Unsmoked home-tanned deerhide, with a scalloped tab at the back of the heel.

Motifs and Patterns

The vamp is covered with faded green pieced ribbons, appliqued with diamond shapes cut from red and blue ribbon, embellished with outline, zigzag and scroll beadwork in white, pink and blue beads. The seam joining the vamp to the moccasin is covered with decorative red embroidery thread in herringbone stitch. Red, blue, pink and green ribbons band the front edges of the flaps in zigzag design, with ribbon ends hanging free.

Additional Context

The blue-black fabric is known as 'Lindsay', 'Woolsy' or 'Union' cloth (in which the warp is linen and the weft is wool). The outlining of the ribbonwork with beads points to Ojibwe.
