Introduction

moccasins with quillwork on cuff, collected by Arthur Speyer, formerly in the collection of the Duke of Gotha, Onkwehonwe (Iroquois, Mohawk, Hodenosaunee), 1700s - 1800s.

Materials

tanned, dark smoked and dyed hide (JBrant suggests use of walnut outer shells in either fire or as dye mxture to produce dark brown colour). Porcupine quills( red-orange, light blue, white, black, yellow), red-dyed hair (moose/deer). Cones not present, but tassels there.

Techniques or Format

puckered toe, with centre seam. Porcupine quill seam cover, one piece construction including cuffs, vertical heel seam. Single quill edging, simple line quillwork below quill panel. Zig zag band in double and single stitching.

Motifs and Patterns

double zig zag band and single zig zag band, 1 quill edging, Wavy line bordering upper vamp quill panel, Double curves. If documented Mohawk, this piece could become diagnostic. Also has cross motif.

Other Notes

Were these purchased unfinished? One mocassion has bundles of deer hair tacked to the side, but the other did not. JBrant says "waiting for cones?"

Dimensions: 25.2 × 13 × 0 cm
Condition: fair to poor , fading of quill colour, damage to quillwork. Doesn't look like they have been wore.
