Introduction

These moosehair-embroidered black hide moccasins,received by Lord and Lady Elgin from the Huron-Wendat community of Wendake (Lorette), illustrate the fine embroidery skills and aesthetic of the artists of the Wendat community of this period.

Materials

Hide, dyed and smoked; dyed moosehair; thread.

Techniques or Format

The moccasins are of vamp construction, with pleats around the vamp insert seam. They have cuffs folded over the body of the moccasin.

Motifs and Patterns

The cuffs and vamp are elaborated with stylized floral motifs in red, blue, and white dyed moosehair.
