This ancestor is an awl, mgoos, made from steel and bone. Off-white in colour, the bone handle on the awl is from a joint socket, as identified by its ovoid hole, and has a steel needle inserted. This ancestor's handle has two perforated holes, two engraved slashes nearing the end of the handle, and three engraved "X" marks, two on the front side, one on the top. This ancestor is currently located in the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Awl made from steel needle inserted in a bone handle. Handle is made from a socket joint having a narrow ovoid hole running lengthwise through the upper part.
There are two drilled transverse perforations through the handle and deeply engraved ornamentations consisting of short slashes and "X" marks.
