Introduction

Man's leggings. Hodenosaunee, Seneca. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1910.

Materials

black woolen cloth; orange-yellow silken ribbon; olive cotton tape; size 12 and 10 opaque white beads; beige thread; black thread; pink thread

Techniques or Format

Each legging is made of a large piece of black woolen cloth, with small sections pieced together at the top. They are sewn up, with no open space left at the bottom. The beaded edging is done with a brick stitch. A strap of cotton tape is sewn to the top of each legging.

Motifs and Patterns

Inward facing curves, with a small circle (bud) in the middle.

the brick stitch edging is found on two pairs of women's leggings - NMAI 029664 and 029667, also collected by Keppler. They are listed as from Cattaraugus. Could these be from Cattarugus as well?

Condition: Some deterioration of the silken ribbon.
