Materials

Navy blue napped plain weave wool, cotton fabric, rayon ribbon, metal sequins, glass size 10 seed beads.

Techniques or Format

The leggings are partially lined with striped cotton. Tin or aluminum sequins with red beads in centers are applied to edgings. There is a casing around the upper edges to pass a tie string through.

Motifs and Patterns

Bottom halves have an all-over foliate beadwork design of many colors, with turquoise predominating. Beadwork design in two rows of applique outlining floral motifs; mostly symmetrical from vertical line at inner leg. Ribbon colours on each legging are different (A has pink hem with brown and red side borders; B has brown hem with yellow and blue side borders).

Other Notes

Dimensions for 81.481.B: 14.875 x 19 in. These have probably been reworked from an earlier item. This is suggested by the rayon ribbon, metalic sequins and tapering on the sides. These traits are characteristic of a later time period than the one when the beadwork on woollen cloth was done. A wide band of velcro is attached to the upper edge of both leggings, applied by unknown museum personnel for mounting purposes. (CW)
