Introduction

Leggings with beadwork in a stylized bud motif. Collected by FW Waugh from Wikwemikoing, Manitoulin Is in 1916. Leggins belonged to Mrs. Angelique Masezozgwe. Anishinaabe and Odawa.

Materials

list cloth (not stroud) (list is synonymous with selvege); classic calico; selvage not visible (may be cut shorter) size 13 seed beads for hem motif, edging in size 9; rough silk tape on edging; lined with indigo blue discharge print

Techniques or Format

there is a style of this length; piecing looks original, cloth is all the same; made of smaller scraps; not sure if lining is only under beadwork or all the way around; all hand stitched (pre 1850); The beading is done with natural and blue cotton threads of old type. the beading is worked through the broadcloth and the lining

Motifs and Patterns

Stylized bud within a somewhat triangular frame, with stylized leaves on each side. Between the motifs blue crosses.

stroud vs list: stroud -- fuzzy (cannot see weave); list can see weave; list is more characteristic of yorkshire; stroud is earlier than list and mutates into broadcloth(finer)

Dimensions: 36.5 × 22 × 0 cm
Condition: fragile, showing evidence of wear; some missing beads; silk frayed and missing
very rough top edge; worn considerably; missing beads may indicate a garter used to be there;
