John Graves Simcoe to Alexander McKee, 23 July 1793
Simcoe writes of his dissatisfaction that the Creeks and Cherokees have taken up arms against the United States. He fears this may have influence the Western Indians not to seek peace with the United States with the result that "it may be the more difficult to bring about a Peace between them and the United States in which his Majesty's Government is so matereally concerned." This passage is significant in that it demnostrates Simcoe's complicated perspective on the negotiations. Other documents demonstrate his wariness and expectation that the Americans will try to take advantage of the Western Indians, and yet in this document Simcoe expresses his desire to see the Americans get the peace they desire, as it is also in the best interests of the British Crown.
