Introduction

A leather cap decorated with cloth ribbons and metal buttons. Formerly part of the Speyer (III) collection, who attributed this cap to the Huron/Wendat and dated it to ca. 1850.

Materials

leather, cotton tape, cotton cloth (blue, red), red silk ribbon, beige cotton yarn, silvered buttons, wild turkey feathers

Techniques or Format

A rectengular piece of leather is gathered along the upper edge and sewn down half way the back. The bottom edge is bound with cotton cloth and the outside decorated with zizag cutout cloth stripes. Concave silvered buttons with punch decoration encircle the bands. A bunch of split turkey feathers is fastened on the top. Sewing done with beige cotton thread.
