Nation of Maker: Anishinaabe
Place of Origin: Wisconsin, USA
Date Made or Date Range: 184u/185u
Materials

Plain weave cotton cloth, cotton seam tape, cotton calico, linen thread, size 13 seed beads, size 16 seed beads

Techniques or Format

Red cotton cloth strap with rounded ends is backed with beige cotton print and bound with blue cotton seam tape. There is evidence that straps and ribbon were once attached to either end, at the front of the piece.

Motifs and Patterns

Decoration in outline beadwork of white, green and yellow, shows two human hands at center with stylized symmetrical plant motifs on either side.

Additional Context

The limited palette beadwork and curvilinear stlye of beadwork date this piece closer to 1840 (CW, DP).

Other Notes

Pohrt believes strap may have been used as a burden strap on a baby carrier. Does not appear to be a burden strap (too delicate), probably a headdress band (CW, DJ, AC).

Dimensions: 24 × 2.875 × 0 in
Condition: Some beadwork missing, staining on the cloth may be salt (sweat), coloured cloth backgrounding parts of the beadwork has come away
Reasons for connecting this relative with particular times, materials, styles and uses

DIA record from Pohrt dates the piece at 1880, but CW and DP agree that it is probably several decades earlier due to materials and stylistic traits.
