Introduction

This beaded hat has brown velveteen base with cardboard backing for the beadwork. Panels were hand sewn with beaded floral designs in opaque, transparent and opalescent white, shades of yellow/gold, shades of blue, greens, dusty rose, and red. This cap was likely made between 1840s and 1880s in Eastern Woodland among Iroquois. Item was acquired from Mrs. Fred R. Jueneman in 1958.

Materials

Brown velveteen base; plain weave polished cotton lining and Calico fabric lining; remnants of red cotton border; embossed flat copper strip; metallic sequins; cotton thread; cardboard stiffening; Size 10 and Size 15/17 seed beads: opaque, transparent and opalescent white, shades of yellow/gold (4), shades of blue (2), shades of green (2), shades of dusty rose (2), shades of red (transparent red and white lined red).

Techniques or Format

Beaded on the velvet with cardboard backing. Each panel is backed with the same shape of cardboard, and the beads are sewn through all layers of the fabric and cardboard. Four primary triangular panels at the top, and four half-oval shapes. Panels are stitched together with thread. All handsewn. Sequin with seedbeads interspersed along the floral designs, some are missing. Satin stitch embroidery with beads. (Not Iroqiousan raised-beadwork). Edging stitch around the edge of half-ovals. Copper strip wrapped around a string at the top of the hat. May be missing a border. Beads sewn over paper pattern, velveteen, and paper backing.

Motifs and Patterns

Opposing sides are almost symmetrical with paired patterns. Eight design fields, but four paired patterns. Floral motifs, white bead outline.
