Introduction

Late 20th century oval shaped hair ornament with removable pin decorated with floral beadwork, possibly depicting a red rose design. Made by Archie LaVallie, Anishinaabe from Montana or North Dakota around 1998 and collected by Pieter Hovens during a field trip in 1998.

Materials

Commercially treated black leather or fabric (?); seed beads (red, white, black, green, transparent); white commercial thread; possibly white fabric(?); wood(?) or plastic(?).

Techniques or Format

Floral beadwork secured to possibly white fabric panel(?) with white commercial thread and backed with possibly commercially treated black leather or fabric(?). There are two holes on either side of the ornament holding the stick or "pin" in place, and both are reinforced with rings of black leather or fabric(?) sewn to the hair ornament backing. The removable pin has one pointed end and is made of possibly wood or plastic(?). It is decorated with beadwork and looped beaded fringe which is removable on the pointed end of the pin.
