Introduction

This ancestor is a pair of garters, gshkidaasebzowin, woven in segments of short parallel stripes continuing out of phase their entire length. Red, ochre, black and green in colour, these coloured stripes are outlined with white beads that emphasize the staggered effect. On both ends the warp yarns becomes long loose ends with red wool strung in-between with white glass beads. The beads are, uniquely, strung on a red yarn weft (making it more fragile). GRASAC researchers observed that these garters were longer than many others they have seen. This ancestor is located in the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Techniques or Format

Each garter is woven in segments of short parallel stripes continuing out of phase the entire length. The colored stripes are outlined with white beads, emphasizing the staggered effect. The warp yarns become long loose ends, with supplementary red wool yarns strung with white beads. Colors used: red, ochre, black and green. The beads are, uniquely, strung on a red yarn weft (making it more fragile).

Motifs and Patterns

The beaded sections run along the entire length linearly, appearing to shift up every 2.5", from being between colour rows to being in the middle of a colour, and back.

Additional Context

These garters are exceptionally long, though maybe not long enough to go around the leg twice. They would likely have been worn with the excess hanging long according to David Penney and Cory Willmott.
